For four days beginning May 3, 1973, the Okinawa Special National Sports Festival-Wakanatsu Sports Fest- was held. This tournament, held in commemoration of Okinawa's reversion to Japan, was different than others in the sense that there were no preliminaries, and therefore all the various areas of Japan were equally represented in each event. The scale of this mini sports festival was one-fifth that of the Autumn National Sports Fest.
