Together with
the reversion, the U.S. dollar to Japanese yen changeover
was performed beginning May 15 for a period of six days.
Due to market speculation fluctuations in August 1971,
the dollar depreciated - falling from 360 to 305 yen
per dollar. Okinawa, being in the dollar economic sphere,
experienced great damage. Prefecture citizens requested
the exchange rate be set at 360 yen, but eventually
the exchange was done at 305 yen to the dollar, greatly
despairing them.
