Arts and Crafts Development

Artisans skilled in the various arts and crafts were employed by the government of the Ryukyu Kingdom and emigrated to Shuri or Naha in the 17th century. Arts and crafts were developed to meet the wholesale as well as private market demands. Arts and crafts were actively encouraged for the samurais who did not have professions as part of the policies of reconstruction developed by Saion in 1728. Crafts such as metalworking in gold, silver, and copper, textiles, such as dyed cloth, liquor making, miso and soy sauce manufacture, cabinet-working, sculpture, lacquerware and wood crafts were developed in Shuri.
