Kurourushi Senjin Black Lacquer Box
This box uses the Raden mother of pearl inlay technique and is decorated with flowers and birds. The Magistrate of Shellwork in the Ryukyuan royal court produced much work in this type of technique for use as tribute and tax goods for the processions to Edo (Tokyo). Of the small cylindrical coffers on the right, the taller was used for holding the tea towel and the short lidded one was used as a tea caddy for the tea ceremony.
