The Latter Period Ryukyus / Reconstruction of the Ryukyu Kingdom 2/10

The Ideas of Haneji Choshu

The bold political reform which Haneji Choshu performed was within the context of a theory called "Nichi Ryu Doso Ron " which stipulated that the ancestry of the Ryukyuan people and the Japanese were originally the same. In order to establish cooperative relations with Satsuma Domain, the rule of the Ryukyus by Satsuma needed to be rationalized under the basis of such theories as this. Haneji edited the "Chuzan Sei Kan", the official history of the Ryukyus Kingdom on the basis of the Nichi Ryu Doso Ron theory before he became regent. This is the first official history of the Ryukyus. It wrote that the Ryukyus had relations with Japan from ancient times as historical fact. Haneji's realistic policy was promoted as a reform to lead the confused kingdom to reconstruction and took on an important role in allowing the Ryukyu Kingdom to change with the times. Through his reforms the kingdom underwent a period of internal criticism.
