At a Japan -U.S. leaders' conference held in November 1969, Okinawa's reversion to Japan was decided on; it would take place in 1972. In November 1970 Okinawa took part in the national election for the first time, during which five members of the House of Representatives and two members of the House of Councilors were elected as Okinawa's representatives.
