In 1950, due to the demand for resources brought on by the outbreak of the Korean War, leftover scrap metal from the Battle of Okinawa's "Typhoon of Steel" was exported to mainland Japan beginning in 1953. The boom reached its peak in 1956 when iron scrap was valued like gold and even children were running to pick up scrap.
