One of the experts of postwar Okinawan folk songs. Knowledgeable about the Sanshin (Okinawan samisen) since childhood, his songs show a high degree of technical skill. Friends with another famous musician, Rinsho Kadekaru, who is but one year younger than Kohama. When Kadekaru repatriated after the war, they formed a duet and performed a wide variety of music from the very old to the very new. Some of his students such as Shotoku Yamauchi and Shoei Kina are well known as well. He built up what is known as the Kohama Folk Songs. His works include "Tsuki to Namida", "Rappa-bushi", "Shiki-no-Yorokobi", "Yushiya Monogatari" and "Koza Kouta".
