A performance art that was conveyed from mainland Japan in the 17th to 18th centuries. The Chinese characters used to form this word mean Taro (a man) who comes from Kyoto. Utilizing puppets, it was performed in front of people's houses. If there was a Buddhist memorial service they would sing Buddhist chants. At present the Chondara tradition is being carried on in the Awase of Okinawa City (a prefecturally designated intangible cultural asset) and in Ginoza-son village, Okinawa.
