Yanbaru Forests
The warm and moist forest of Yanbaru, in the northern area of Okinawa Island, is an evergreen broad leaf forest inhabited by many rare animals. The islands of Okinawa broke off and were isolated from continental China, and there are important and rare animals found no where else in the world. They include the Yanbaru Kuina (Okinawan Rail), the Yanbaru Tenagai Kogane (a long legged beetle) and the Noguchi-gera (Pryor's woodpecker). In the 1970's the area experienced development and destruction of the forested areas continues.
