The Unveiling Ceremony of the Cornerstone of Peace , 1995
On War Memorial Day, June 23, on the grounds of the Peace Memorial Park in the Mabuni area of Itoman where fifty years earlier battles had raged, the Cornerstone of Peace was unveiled in 1995. The monument holds the names of all 234,183 persons who perished in the Battle of Okinawa inscribed on its walls. For the unveiling ceremony Prime Minister Murayama and U.S. Ambassador Walter Mondale were present. Governor Ota of Okinawa made a "Declaration of Peace"on June 23, 1995.
