Following protest demanding the removal of toxic gas from Okinawa, the U.S. military transported the supplies of toxic gas and chemical weapons to Johnston Island. The transport of the material caused tension and anxiety in the Okinawans over the 55 days that transport took. Precautions were taken to include rabbits in with the poison gas cargo as a safety check, but the safety of the people living in the vicinity was ignored. July 1971
