| With the intensification of the Vietnam War, the military bases on Okinawa functioned as an advance base of operations for the dispatch of troops. The military ports and the bases were linked by Highway 1 (currently Highway 58) and were continuously used to transport tanks, increasing the anxiety of the Okinawans about renewed war.
