Students Protesting the Price Recommendations, 1956
On May 8, 1956 the Price Recommendations were released advocating lump sum payments for land leased for bases and, subsequently, protests broke out among the residents of Okinawa. On July 28 about 150,000 people participated in the "Four Principles of Land Protection Rally" on the grounds of Naha High School. University students participated in the protest calling for the Price Recommendations to be "smashed firmly. " Struggles over land continued until 1958, when the U.S. military compromised and the issue was resolved in favor of the Okinawans.
