| British Protestant Missionary Barnard Jean Bettleheim (1811-1870) arrived in the Ryukyus in 1846. He stayed at Gokokuji Buddhist Temple in Naha and attempted to spread Christianity but was not very successful, possibly due to interference from the Ryukyuan government.
