This pawnshop was constructed at the height of the Great Depression in 1929. It was managed by the village as a kind of welfare institution for the poor of the area who were suffering under the usurious rates of the day. Most of the buildings on Ie-jima Island were destroyed in the battle for the island. It serves as an important reminder of the fierce battles fought in the area during WWII.
