"Wasurena-ishi" Malaria Victim Memorial on Iriomote-jima Island
This memorial is located in the Haemi coast of Iriomote-jima Island and bears the inscription , "Stone of not forgetting." This is a memorial for the 461 students of Hateruma-jima Island that perished from malaria during WWII. Shinsho Shikina, the principle of the Hateruma Citizen's School wrote the calligraphy that was inscribed in the stone. Toward the end of WWII the Japanese army forcibly evacuated the residents here, where the awful conditions led to their disastrous deaths.
