Entrance to the cave housing the Haebaru Infantry Field Hospital
This hospital was established on a high small hill in Haebaru-cho to treat the Imperial Japanese Army soldiers wounded on the battlefield. Doctors, medics, and nurses from throughout Okinawa were gathered here and amongst them the Himeyuri Corps, composed of young women students. With the battlefield situation deteriorating for the Japanese forces, the order was given to retreat to the southern part of the island, where a cruel fate awaited many of the young women nurses.
