This monument was erected in Asahigaoka-koen Park in the Nami-no-Ue section of Naha City in memorial to those children and students lost when the evacuation ship Tsushima-maru was sunk. On August 21, 1944, a U.S. Navy submarine torpedoed and sunk the ship in the waters off Akuseki-jima Island Kagoshima Prefecture. Of the 1,700 passengers on the boat, 800 were students and children evacuating to the mainland in advance of the approaching war. Around 1,500 of them perished with the ship.
