Shigeru Narahara
(1834-1918) The eighth governor of Okinawa was a native of Kagoshima. Narahara was in office for fifteen years and ten months starting in 1892. He was an authoritarian governor who rode over the protests of the farmers in opening up the forests for lumbering by upper-class samurai. During his rule the number of officials from Satsuma increased. The Satsuma clique nicknamed him the "King of the Ryukyus."
