The first group of scholarship students from Okinawa
to be sent for study in mainland Japan.
This photograph of the first group of scholarship students to mainland Japan is believed to have been taken in 1884. In the back row furthest to the right is the statesman Noburu Jahana when he was 18 years old. After studying farming in Tokyo he went on to become a member of the elite of Okinawa and the symbol of the destruction of the old class system of the monarchy. Photograph: Naha City
