The Chinkin gilt-line engraving technique is used on this piece to create a pattern of peonies that covers the entire outside surface. The origin of the name for this type of tray, "Ugufan," is not known but it is believed to be related to utensils used in religious ceremonies and rites. This piece is believed to have been produced in the 17th century under the magistrate in charge of shellwork and lacquer.
