Oyake-Akahachi Rebellion
In the latter 15th century on the Sakishima Islands (Sakishima Island, and the Miyako and Yaeyama Islands) there were violent confrontations between the leader of Miyako, Nakasone-tuimiya, who was appointed by the Ryukyuan King Sho En, and the as yet un-unified Aji regional chieftains of Yaeyama Island. A man named Oyake- Akahachi Hon-gawara from the Ohama region of Yaeyama, without giving allegiance nor tribute, sought to rebel and held ambitions to rule both the Yaeyama and Miyako islands. The Royal Government dispatched an expeditionary force and together with Miyako's Nakasone-Tuimiya and Shitabaru Ojiru left for Ishigaki-jima Island. Meeting the defenses of the battle-prepared Akahachi forces, the King's army found it difficult to make a landing on the island. However due to an ingenious strategy employed the Noro Chinpe (a priestess) the landing was at last successful and the King's forces swept over the enemy in one strike, crushing the ambitions of Oyake-Akahachi. As reward for their victory in war, the King ordered that Nakasone-Tuimiya be given leadership over Miyako-jima Island and his second son, Machirigani-Tuimiya be given leadership over Yaeyama with the title Kashirashoku. This was the first time that the royal court posted a leader to govern the Sakishima Islands. |
