Prehistoric Okinawa / The Neolithic Age in Okinawa 3/4

Aspects of Jomon Period Okinawa (2)

The Late Jomon Period (Approx. 4000 - 3,000 years ago)
During this period the prehistoric Nanto central cultural sphere developed an independent culture. The biggest influence was the development of the Iha-shiki type and the Ogido-shiki type from the Ichiki-shiki type Kyushu earthenware vessels that had previously been produced. Because of the excavation of dragon and butterfly shaped shell work, it is believed that there were ties with the Chinese continent during this period.

Final Jomon Period (Approx. 3000 - 2,300 years ago)
This period saw the establishment of villages and an increase in the population on the islands. Rudimentary farming was started and excavations have uncovered vessels used for storage. Exchanges with Kyushu occurred frequently and this is believed to have exerted an enormous influence.
