This residence was built in 1819 by eighth generation district head Miyara Peechin Toen. In the Ryukyu Kingdom the regulations for residences were dictated according to one's social status. For the island governor to have built such a house was an infringement on the regulations and the builder was ordered to change the roof from a red tile roof to a thatched roof. After the dissolution of the domains and establishment of the prefectural system in 1879, the house reverted to what can be seen today.
In 1972 it was designated as an Important National Cultural Property.
