This shrine is located in the Sueyoshi forest northwest of Shuri and was once one of the eight most important shrines in the Ryukyus. It was built by Kakuou Osho, a priest of the Tenkaiji Temple who consulted the Kumano Sansha Gongen (Shinto deities) to ask if a shrine could be built on the sight. In 1972 it was designated a National Historic Site by Japan. In 1956 the cobblestone stairway was designated a Cultural Property by Okinawa Prefecture..
