Gushikawa Castle Ruins
Gushikawa Castle is on the northwestern seacoast that juts out on Kume-jima Island and was built on top of a Ryukyuan limestone hill. Built by chieftain Madafutsu Aji, it was abandoned in the latter half of the 15th century. Inside the castle, many sherds of foreign produced celadon ceramics, earthenware vessels and remains of iron scraps have been excavated. Because of the many iron scraps discovered here it is thought that the area once had a forge. In 1975 it was designated a National Historic Site by Japan.
