Gushikawa Castle Ruins
Gushikawa Castle is on top of a western sea cliff that juts out of Cape Kyan on the southern tip of the Okinawa mainland. Except for the eastern side, it is surrounded by the sea in three directions. The ramparts are 5-10 meters tall and are loosely piled natural stone in the Nozura style. There are two parts to the castle and inside there is a natural cave that is said to extend through to the sea. The date of construction is not known. It is said to have been constructed by the lord Makanekui-Aji, ruler of Gushikawa Castle on Kume-jima Island. In 1972 it was designated a National Historic Site by Japan.
