This Gusuku (castle) is considered an important sacred area. Located north of Tamagusuku village at an elevation of 180 meters and constructed on a limestone hill, it is also referred to as Amachiji-gusuku. The castle is characterized by the use of natural stone carved out for the gate that faces out to the east. Inside the castle there are numerous places used for prayer as well as the residence. Legend has it that this castle was built by the creator goddess Amamikiyo. It is one of the sites visited by the kings or high priestess in a yearly procession of prayers given at various locations around the area during a rite called Agariumai. In 1987 it was designated a National Historic Site by Japan. .
