Zakami-joseki Castle Ruins
The whole of the west coast and the islands of the East China Sea can be viewed from this medium sized castle located in the Zakimi area of Yomitan-son. The castle is said to have been built in the latter 15th century by Gosamaru, who went on to become lord of Nakagusuku. He gathered workers from the Amami Islands and built this castle from stones taken from Yamada Gusuku Castle, located about 4lm to the northeast. Excavations within the castle have yielded many Chinese ceramic vessels. In 1956 it was designated a Prefectural Cultural Property by Okinawa. In 1972 it was designated a National Historic Site by Japan.
