In August 1997 1,700 martial artists from 50 countries gathered in Okinawa for the Okinawa Karate Kobudo World Tournament held at the Prefectural Martial Arts Hall. Participants studied with enthusiasm the techniques and spirit of Okinawa karate and kobudo (Okinawan weapons fighting).
