A rectangular letter box, black lacquered wood with Mother-of-pearl Inlay, design of clouds, dragons and phoenixes.

@A round-cornered joinerywork letter box with overlapping lid. Joints use wooden or bamboo pegs, and there is a cloth reinforcement layer. @The left and right sides of the lid have been decoratively carved away, to reveal brass fittings for lid ties. The surface is black lacquer.
@Against a background of Mother-of-pearl Inlaid honeycomb lattice, there are a pair of three-clawed dragons holding jewels amid auspicious clouds on the top of the lid, and a phoenix and cloud design on its sides.
@The shell is of medium thickness, and is decorated with hairline engraving. The overlying lacquer has been peeled off to reveal the design (hagidashi technique).
