Assimilation
The Third period 1970's

1970's was the time Okinawa was going through the process of reverting to Japanese politics & culture. Okinawa Reversion was the symbol of such time shifting.
It is also described as the time for searching inner side of oneself after Reversion and Okinawa Expo '76 took place. After avant- garde movement ended, there were no artistic movement, nor trend of thought.Artists either joined the art association in mainland Japan, or increased insight in reaction against 60's movement. World-wide recession in early 70's affected Okinawan economy. However, increased public investment by national government which includes holding national events such as the Okinawa Expo''76 accelerated Okinawa's modernization, in other words, assimilation.
In reaction against Group Ko's avant-garde movement and Sotokai's modernism, artists in 1970's either participated in art associations in mainlandJapan to achieve an equal footing with artists in mainland Japan, or tried to increase insight in order to seek for locality in their work in aspect of methods, form, and artistic convictions. It is said that Reversion ruined artists' enthusiasm and made them lose their motivation. However, traveling without a passport and increased/updated information broadened Okinawa art world. Gaining opportunity to see the real art work and obtaining more information became much more easier. Before then, the goal of Okinawan artists were to be awarded at art associations exhibition in mainland Japan and become a membership. Discord between the first generation and the second generation can be found in this point.
The second generation went through difficult time in participating art exhibition in mainland Japan since U.S. military controlled Okinawan administration in those days. Such suppressed desires led to the movement.
