| This hospital was established on a high small hill in Haebaru-cho to treat Imperial Japanese Army soldiers wounded in the battlefield. Doctors, medics, and nurses from throughout Okinawa were gathered here and amongst them were the Himeyuri Corps, composed of young women students. With the battlefield situation deteriorating for the Japanese forces, the order was given to retreat to the southern part of the island, where a cruel fate awaited many of the young girl nurses.
